The Bee Flies, Bombyliidae

For some time now i have been studying this very large and diverse group of flies, particularly from the Mediterranean sub-region, but to a lesser extent World-wide. Because many of them are large and attractive insects, they have received from many dipterists going back to the time of Fabricius. This might sound like an advantage, but in fact the opposite is true. So many names have been erected, often on the basis of very poor descriptions, in many cases the types now lost or seriously damaged. Thus, identification of bee flies is often very difficult and even when a name has been arrived at from the usual keys, it can often be incorrect or a synonym.

It is hoped that progress with bee fly taxonomy will be reported here.
